Context
The Cavalier Daily is the independent student-run newspaper at the University of Virginia and Charlottesville's oldest publication. My work as a cartoonist is based in observation — watching how students move through campus life, respond to events, and share common experiences. The insight driving my work: college students find belonging in shared moments, even in an increasingly isolating digital world. Each cartoon distills that truth into a single visual story.
My Role
As a Senior Associate Cartoonist, I create original editorial cartoons for publication and oversee a team of seven cartoonists. My responsibilities include contributing monthly work, maintaining a shared tonal and copy standard, and providing feedback to ensure consistency across the section.
Process & Craft
Each cartoon begins with hand sketching — working through ideas intuitively before refining and finalizing digitally in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. This hybrid approach keeps the work feeling alive while meeting the precision required for publication.

Across all cartoons, the goal is a consistent visual language and tone so the work feels cohesive even as topics change.
Below are a few early ideations and sketches of published cartoons.

Published Work
Themes range from iconic UVA moments like a fourth-years last first day, the trek to the ACC championship, to the universally relatable, like midterm season.

Reflection
Resonant creative work requires close attention to context. This role taught me how to craft narratives that communicate clearly the moment they're seen, and how a consistent brand voice builds trust with an audience over time.
